Azure Local

Azure Local and Hyper-V

EquiByte focuses on Azure Local and hybrid infrastructure — the architecture, deployment and operation of environments that run on-premises and are connected to Azure. Jaromír Kašpar, Microsoft MVP for 6 years.

Overview

Azure Local and Hyper-V in practice

Azure Local and Hyper-V are used to run virtualisation and hybrid infrastructure on-premises, connected to Azure. These technologies — their design and operation — are the focus of EquiByte.

Background and experience

I spent 4 years at Dell as a Global Engineering Outreach Specialist, responsible for the top 10 Azure Local customers worldwide. Before that, I spent more than 10 years at Microsoft as a Premier Field Engineer and Cloud Solution Architect. I have been a Microsoft MVP (Microsoft Most Valuable Professional) for 6 years.

Azure Local or Hyper-V?

Azure Local is designed for on-premises infrastructure closely integrated with Azure — in management, services and operating model. Hyper-V is a virtualisation platform for environments where virtualisation itself is the focus. The difference is mainly in the degree of connection to Azure and in how the environment is managed.

What we do

Areas of work with Azure Local

Architecture

Hardware, networking, storage, Azure connectivity and sizing of the environment.

What this covers
  • Architecture design
  • Assessment of hardware, networking and storage
  • Documentation of the designed solution

Deployment

Deployment and configuration of the cluster to the design.

What this covers
  • Installed environment
  • Functionality verified
  • As-built documentation

Operations and experience

Practical experience from operating and administering these environments.

What this covers
  • Operations and maintenance procedures
  • How administrators work with the environment
  • The context of day-to-day operations
Deployment in outline

From design to operations

Work on an Azure Local environment follows familiar phases — from design through deployment to day-to-day operation.

Design

Environment architecture, choice of hardware, networking and storage, and how it connects to Azure.

Deployment

Installation and configuration of the cluster to the design.

Verification

Checking that the deployed environment works, and documenting the as-built state.

Operations

Day-to-day administration, maintenance and further development of the environment.

On the topic

What is the difference between Azure Local and Hyper-V?

Azure Local is a hybrid platform closely connected to Azure; Hyper-V is a virtualisation technology. The difference lies mainly in the operating model, management and how far Azure services are used.

What does hybrid infrastructure mean?

The environment runs on-premises but is connected to Azure — for example for management, identities, backup or other cloud services.
